About Tommy
Tommy Jones is a distinguished Growth Coach, educator, leadership consultant, and strategic advisor. Electing for a more applied approach to his Graduate School experience, he began working as an Academic Mentor and soon fell in love with the field of Student-Athlete Academic Support. This led to a 15-year career working as an Academic Advisor, Academic Counselor, NBA advisory board member, and Associate Director. His responsibilities included providing individualized academic support plans, skill set development, career counseling, team building, mental wellness counseling, and personal financial education to various high-profile and underprepared student-athletes with Men’s Basketball, Football, Women’s Basketball, and Women’s Volleyball Programs.
Tommy’s leadership experience was greatly strengthened in these roles, as he provided direct support and supervision to championship teams, part-time and full-time staff, along with maintaining day-to-day operations of Michigan’s Ross Academic Center for Student-Athletes. This included the recruitment, training and oversight of large Tutorial, Mentoring, and Assistant Academic Counselor Programs. Tommy’s drive for excellence combined with his ability to build effective relationships was the key to his success and upward mobility within the Student Athlete Academic Support field. This led to his success with creating, implementing and evaluating comprehensive programs and workshops, as well as building trust with Student-Athletes, Parents, Athletic Directors, Athletic Administrators, Deans, Vice Provosts, Faculty, Sport Coaches, Operations, and Medical Staffs.
Tommy earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Sport Management from the University of Michigan (2001). While in Ann Arbor, Tommy was a member of the Football Team, who won two Big Ten Championships and one BCS Championship (1998-2000) during this time playing wide receiver. Tommy earned his Master’s Degree in Counseling from Michigan State University (2006).

My Story
Football is one of my loves. My years of playing football helped me practice skills and have a mindset for team success that my parents, brothers, and sister also helped instill in me.
My love of football helped fuel my dream of playing at the University of Michigan. To reach this goal I had to overcome many adversities and obstacles. On my journey to achieving this goal to play at Michigan, I gained a much better understanding of the importance of mental strength, personal accountability, goal setting, good decision making, self-discipline, and having a strong work-ethic. I also learned how to develop and apply these skills, which would emphatically forever change my life.
Fulfilling this dream of mine, along with obtaining my Master’s degree in Counseling, led to my 15-year career working in college athletics. My work experience was the catalyst for creating Growth 4 Life and why our mission is to empower and support clients on their journey to achieving their dreams. I want to share the lessons that I have learned, along with utilize my counseling training and work career, to help others strategize and develop skills that will help them overcome any adversities and obstacles they may face in realizing their dreams.
